Evaluating an International HRM Strategy: Barclay plc

HRM strategy is effective when suitable employees are selected for the correct posts and the purpose of the paper is to analyze the difficulties faced in HRM strategies when Barclays PLC in UK opened a joint venture in Hong Kong. For this purpose, it needs to transfer expatriates to the host country in Hong Kong and hire locals for the lower positions. However, Barclays PLC faces some issues in the HRM strategies and culture problems are encountered by the expatriates. The company undertook an ethnocentric approach for which it faced organizational issues in the host country Hong Kong. The international business environment has also been discussed in this paper. The recruitment process of the company in Hong Kong was based on Fraser’s fivefold grading and the company provided both in house training as well as off job training to the employees working in Hong Kong for cultural issues. The reward system of the company in the host country is based on CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) reward system for engaging the workers and motivating them.
